BSN Round 13 (Regular Season): Arecibo lose to Leones

Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

Round 13 most important game was a defeat of league's leader Capitanes (10-6). They were crushed by fourth ranked Leones (5-7) 93-71 on Wednesday night. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Capitanes. Ponce looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. American guard Matt Mooney (189-1997, college: Texas Tech) stepped up and scored 15 points and 8 assists for the winners and naturalized Nicaraguan Jared Ruiz (188-1992) chipped in 16 points and 6 rebounds. At the losing side forward RJ Melendez (201-2002, college: MSU) responded with 17 points. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Ponce maintains fourth place with 5-7 record. Arecibo at the other side still keeps top position with six games lost. They share it with Mayaguez. They were replaced at the leadership position by Mayaguez. Arecibo will play next round against San German trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Ponce will try to continue on its current victory against second ranked Santurce at home.

American guard Brandon Knight (190-1991, college: Kentucky) came up with 18 points and 5 assists for Arecibo in the defeat. Capitanes' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Ponce maintains fourth place with 5-7 record. Arecibo at the other side still keeps top position with six games lost. They share it with Mayaguez. Ponce will play against league's second-placed Santurce at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Arecibo will play against San German and hopes to get back on the winning track.
Fourth-ranked Criollos (7-8) gave a tough game to first ranked Vaqueros (13-3) in Bayamon on Monday. Vaqueros managed to secure only two-point victory 86-84. However their fans expected easier game. Javale McGee fired a double-double by scoring 11 points and 15 rebounds for the winners. Louis King produced 25 points and 5 rebounds for lost side. Criollos' coach tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Bayamon maintains first place with 13-3 record. Loser Criollos keep the fourth position with eight games lost. Bayamon will meet Manati (#6) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Caguas will play against Quebradillas and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 13: Santurce won against Guaynabo on the opponent's court 104-92. Manati unfortunately lost to Mayaguez in a home game 97-98. San German recorded a loss to Quebradillas on the road 92-99.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 21 points and 6 assists by Andre Curbelo of San German.



Arecibo - Ponce 88-94

Bayamon - Caguas 86-84

Fourth-ranked Criollos (7-8) gave a tough game to first ranked Vaqueros (13-3) in Bayamon on Monday. Vaqueros managed to secure only two-point victory 86-84. However their fans expected easier game. Bayamon made 19-of-22 free shots (86.4 percent) during the game. Bayamon outrebounded Caguas 47-29 including 16 on the offensive glass. American center Javale McGee (213-1988, college: Nevada) fired a double-double by scoring 11 points and 15 rebounds for the winners. Dominican swingman Chris Duarte (197-1997, college: Oregon) chipped in 15 points and 5 rebounds. Four Vaqueros players scored in double figures. American forward Louis King (201-1999, college: Oregon) produced 25 points and 5 rebounds (made all of his seven free throws) and Panamanian-American center Akil Mitchell (206-1992, college: Virginia) added 16 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for lost side. Rather expected game in Guaynabo where 5th ranked Mets (7-9) were defeated by second ranked Cangrejeros (9-6) 104-92 on Tuesday. Santurce dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Mets's 30. Santurce looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. American center Hassan Whiteside (213-1989, college: Marshall) fired a double-double by scoring 24 points and 15 rebounds for the winners. Forward Angel Rodriguez (193-1992, college: PR-Bayamon) chipped in a double-double by scoring 10 points, 9 rebounds and 10 assists. The former international Jaysean Paige (188-1994, college: WVU) produced 29 points and American guard Bryn Forbes (190-1993, college: Michigan St.) added 21 points respectively for lost side. Five Santurce and four Guaynabo players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Santurce maintains second place with 9-6 record having five points less than leader Mayaguez. Loser Mets keeps the fifth position with nine games lost. Santurce will meet Ponce (#4) on the road in the next round. Guaynabo will have a break next round.

Rather predictable result in Manati where second ranked Indios (10-6) edged 6th ranked Osos (3-9) 98-97 on Tuesday. Mayaguez made 16-of-20 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Mayaguez made 8 blocks. New Zealand forward Samuel Waardenburg (208-1999, college: Miami, FL) fired 31 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. New Zealand center Tyrell Harrison (214-1999) chipped in a double-double by scoring 21 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks. Indios' coach Ivan Velez used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Mali power forward Cheick Diallo (206-1996, college: Kansas) produced a double-double by scoring 15 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists and the former international Ismael Cruz (190-2000, college: Indian Hills) added 15 points and 8 assists respectively for lost side. Five Manati players scored in double figures. Mayaguez keeps a position of league leader, which they share with Arecibo. Loser Osos keeps the sixth place with nine games lost. They share the position with Aguada. Mayaguez will meet Aguada (#6) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Manati will play against the league's leader Bayamon and hope to secure a win.
